Nordegg sits in the heart of David Thompson Country, offering access to incredible landscapes and outdoor recreation opportunities that often feel like hidden gems compared to the busier national parks. The town and surrounding area provide a perfect base for adventurers who want to experience authentic mountain culture while having easy access to hiking, paddling, and scenic viewpoints that rival anything you’ll find in more well-known destinations.
In my video below, I walk through the experience exactly as shown and explained:
Upper Shunda Campground: A Perfect Base Camp
Our stay in the Nordegg area was anchored at the Upper Shunda Campground, located just a few hundred metres from the town itself. This proximity makes it incredibly convenient for accessing supplies, restaurants, and local attractions while still maintaining that peaceful camping atmosphere you’re looking for when heading into the mountains.

The campground itself is thoughtfully designed with three distinct loops, each catering to different camping styles and equipment. One loop is specifically designed for large RVs, ensuring that even big rigs have adequate space and facilities. Another loop accommodates medium-sized RVs, while the third is perfect for tent campers and even cyclists who are passing through the area. This variety means that whether you’re traveling in a fully equipped motorhome or carrying everything on your back, there’s a spot designed with your needs in mind.
The layout and organization of Upper Shunda Campground make it feel less crowded and more comfortable than many other campgrounds in the region. Each camping style gets its own dedicated space, which helps create a better experience for everyone. You can check out their website at www.uppershundacampground.ca for more information about bookings, amenities, and what to expect during your stay.

Scrambling The Buckle: A Beginner-Friendly Peak
One of the highlights of our time in the Nordegg area was exploring the lookout found just north of Windy Point. This location offers access to a beginner scramble that takes you all the way up a peak known as The Buckle. The name comes from the distinctive shape of the mountain when viewed from certain angles, resembling the buckle of a belt.
The scramble itself is classified as beginner level, which makes it accessible to people who might not have extensive mountaineering experience but still want to experience the thrill of reaching a summit. The route was incredibly fun to navigate, offering just enough challenge to feel like an accomplishment without requiring technical climbing skills or specialized equipment beyond good hiking boots and basic outdoor gear.

What really makes this scramble worthwhile are the views from the top. Standing on The Buckle, we were treated to some of the best views in all of David Thompson Country. The panoramic vistas stretched in every direction, showcasing the rugged mountain landscape, deep valleys, and the way the forests carpet the lower elevations. It’s the kind of view that makes you pause and really appreciate the scale and beauty of the Canadian Rockies and foothills region.
The location near Windy Point is relatively easy to access from Nordegg, making it a perfect half-day or full-day adventure depending on your pace and how much time you want to spend at the summit taking in the scenery. For anyone staying at Upper Shunda Campground or visiting the Nordegg area, this scramble should definitely be on your itinerary.

Paddleboarding on Shunda Lake
After our morning of hiking and scrambling, we spent an afternoon around Shunda Lake, which is part of the Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area. This area provides excellent opportunities for water-based activities, and we took full advantage of it with some paddleboarding.

For this part of the adventure, I had the opportunity to use equipment provided by Thurso Surf, who sponsored this video by sending us some paddleboards to try out. The boards performed excellently on the calm waters of Shunda Lake, making it easy to explore the shoreline and enjoy the peaceful afternoon on the water.
Shunda Lake is an amazing location for paddling in the area. The water tends to be calm, especially during morning and late afternoon hours, and the surrounding landscape provides beautiful scenery as you glide across the surface. Whether you’re an experienced paddleboarder or trying it for the first time, this lake offers the perfect conditions for a relaxing yet engaging afternoon on the water.

The Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area where Shunda Lake is located provides good access points for launching paddleboards, kayaks, or canoes. It’s another example of how the Nordegg area offers such a diverse range of outdoor activities within a relatively small geographic area. You can check out Thurso Surf’s website at www.thursosurf.com if you’re interested in the paddleboard equipment we used during this adventure.
Miners’ Cafe: A Nordegg Institution
No visit to Nordegg would be complete without stopping at the Miners’ Cafe. We took the time to venture into town specifically to visit this famous establishment that has been serving the community and travelers for years. The cafe has built quite a reputation, and once you visit, you’ll understand why.

The Miners’ Cafe is particularly famous for their amazing pie. This isn’t just local hype—the pie truly lives up to its reputation. The quality, flavor, and generous portions make it a must-try for anyone passing through Nordegg. Whether you’re stopping in for a full meal or just dessert and coffee, the experience captures something essential about small-town mountain culture in Alberta.
The cafe itself reflects the history and character of Nordegg, a town that has its roots in coal mining and has evolved into a hub for outdoor recreation. Stopping at Miners’ Cafe provides not just great food but also a chance to soak in some of that local atmosphere and perhaps chat with other adventurers about what they’ve discovered in the area. You can find more information about their menu and hours at www.minerscafe.ca.
Campfires and Mountain Evenings
Throughout our stay at Upper Shunda Campground, we enjoyed the simple pleasure of campfires in the evening. There’s something timeless about sitting around a fire after a day of outdoor activities, watching the flames dance while the temperature drops and the stars begin to appear overhead.

The campground provides proper fire pits, and following local fire regulations, we were able to enjoy this classic camping experience safely. These evening hours around the fire became a perfect time to reflect on the day’s adventures, plan the next day’s activities, and simply enjoy being unplugged from the usual routines of daily life.
Why Nordegg Stands Out
What makes this area truly special is how it brings together so many different outdoor activities in one accessible location. Within a short drive from your campsite, you can be scrambling up a mountain peak, paddling across a pristine lake, or enjoying homemade pie in a historic cafe. This variety means you can create a diverse itinerary that keeps every day interesting and caters to different energy levels and weather conditions.
Nordegg also tends to be less crowded than destinations like Banff National Park or Jasper National Park, even during peak summer months. This means more solitude on the trails, easier access to campground spots, and a generally more relaxed pace. For people who love the mountains but prefer to avoid the crowds, this area offers an ideal alternative.

The town itself maintains an authentic mountain community feel rather than being overly developed for tourism. You’ll find the essential services and amenities you need, but without the commercialization that can sometimes detract from the wilderness experience. It’s this balance that makes Nordegg feel like a genuine hidden gem in Alberta.
Planning Your Own Nordegg Adventure
If you’re considering a trip to the Nordegg area, Upper Shunda Campground makes an excellent base camp. Its location just outside town means you can easily walk in for supplies or meals while having quick access to trailheads and recreation areas. The different camping loops ensure you can find appropriate accommodation whether you’re in an RV, tent, or arriving by bicycle.
Make sure to add The Buckle scramble to your itinerary if you enjoy hiking and want to experience one of the best viewpoints in the region. The beginner classification means you don’t need to be an expert mountaineer, but proper footwear and basic mountain safety knowledge are still important. Check weather conditions before you go, and bring the usual hiking essentials like water, snacks, and layers for changing conditions.
For water activities, Shunda Lake in the Fish Lake Provincial Recreation Area offers calm conditions ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking, or canoeing. If you don’t have your own equipment, you might want to look into rental options in the area, or consider investing in quality gear like what Thurso Surf produces if you’re planning to make paddling a regular part of your outdoor adventures.

And definitely don’t skip the Miners’ Cafe. Beyond the famous pie, it’s a chance to experience a piece of Nordegg’s character and history. The cafe serves as an informal gathering place where locals and visitors intersect, and you might pick up some valuable tips about other things to see and do in the area.
Capturing the Experience
This video represents an homage to all the great activities that can be found around the town of Nordegg. From the campground facilities to the mountain scrambles, water sports, and local food culture, each element contributes to what makes this area special. The combination of accessibility, variety, and authenticity creates an outdoor experience that feels both adventurous and welcoming.

Whether you’re an experienced outdoors person looking for new terrain to explore or someone planning their first camping trip in the mountains, Nordegg and Upper Shunda Campground offer something valuable. The infrastructure is good enough to feel comfortable and safe, but the wilderness is wild enough to feel like a real adventure. That balance is increasingly rare and worth seeking out.
The landscapes around Nordegg capture the essence of what makes the Canadian Rockies and Alberta foothills so compelling—dramatic mountain peaks, clear lakes, dense forests, and big skies. Getting out to places like The Buckle or paddling across Shunda Lake reminds you why these outdoor experiences matter and why it’s worth taking the time to explore beyond the most obvious destinations.
